Price: 2895 EUR

Join Morten Rustad and Terra Photography Expeditions to the Swiss Alps on a time-lapse and landscape photography trekking adventure!

Morten Rustad and Terra Photography Expeditions are pleased to present a unique photography expedition by road and trail that will take you to some of the most magical and beautiful places in the Alps for an unforgettable nature and photography experience. Throughout the trip, we will be surrounded by the amazing nature that only the Alps can provide. Mountain peaks, streams, lakes, ridge-lines, glaciers, sunsets and sunrises are some of the attractions that will captivate you in this mystical journey. Zermatt, Aletsch Glacier, Lac Louvie are the destinations for this adventure!

The expedition has been carefully designed with passion and enthusiasm based on our personal experiences to ensure that you get optimal chances to get the photos and timelapses that you have been dreaming about. The focus of this tour is to enjoy some beautiful and comfortable hikes (some a bit more strenuous than comfortable…), whilst we create memories for life, amazing timelapses, beautiful photographs and meet like-minded people. And of course, you will get Morten’s advice and expertise in planned and improvised photography sessions.

Itinerary

Day 1 | Geneva Airport - Zermatt – Fluhalp Hut

The team from Terra Photography Expeditions will pick you up at 10AM at Geneva airport. We highly recommend you arrive the day before to make your travel stress free.

After a 2h30 drive, the adventure starts in Täsch, as Zermatt is a completely car-free town. We take a train to Zermatt and then the ski lift up into the mountains. Our goal is the Fluhalp mountain hut at 2606 meters. The hut is ideally situated very close to Stellisee lake, this will give us the opportunity for landscape photography at the right time – around sunset and sunrise and to have a real mountain hut experience.

Note that there is about an hour hiking from the lift at Blauherd to Fluhalp. We highly recommend bringing only the essential equipment and clothes as you will have to carry it on your back.

Once we have checked into the hut and dropped off our non-photography gear we set out towards Stellisee lake at 2,537 m, which is one of the most famous of Zermatt’s lakes to await the sunset and just explore the area.

Photography highlights: Zermatt and Stellisee lake.

Trekking: Approx. 2-3hrs | Distance 4 km | Hight gain/loss +200m, -200m

Day 2 | Fluhalp Hut

Photography workshops means early starts to catch the sunrise and we are up well before the sun! Depending weather forecast, we will either head back to Stellisee lake or head to Unterrothorn, which involves a 2.7 kilometers uphill trek. Both locations gives us unique opportunities to photograph the sunrise over the Matterhorn. We will spend this day in the surroundings of the Fluhalp, doing easy to medium hikes, photographing lakes, alpine landscapes and some flora. As sunset approaches, we will hike to another great lake called Grindjisee having a second opportunity to capture that one image we have all seen and is so quintessentially “the Alps”. During the night we will share some food and wine at the hut.

Photography highlights: We remain at Zermatt and Matterhorn to make sure we have opportunity to get the right shot, even if the weather should be against us one of the days. Sunrise and sunset on location!

Trekking: Approx. 3-6hrs | Distance 4-9 km (weather and route dependent) | Hight gain/loss between +200 and +600m

Day 3 | Fluhalp Hut - Aletsch Glacier

A last opportunity to catch the sunrise and the Matterhorn from high altitude and we are on our way again. After breakfast, we start the journey to Fiesch, a small town where you can breathe the pure air of the Alps. We will stop there for lunch and take some photography. As the first day, there is about an hour hiking from the lift at Eggishorn to Gletscherstube Mountain Hut. After we arrive we will take advantage of sunset, we start a 1.2 kilometeres hike to Aletsch Glacier.

Photography highlights: Aletsch Glacier and Gletscherstube Mountain Hut. The beauty of these landscapes are truly unique in the world.

Trekking: Approx. 2-3hrs | Distance 4 km | Hight gain/loss +200m, -200m

Day 4 | Aletsch Glacier

We will spend the entire day in the surroundings of the Gletscherstube Mountain Hut and overlooking the Aletsch Glacier. We are going to wake up early to photograph the sunrise at the Marjelensee lake, a beautiful scenario that will test our creativity. This is also a perfect moment to take advantage of the sunset and capture those magical moments of the Alps.

Photography highlights: Marjelensee lake, Vordersee lake. Peace and harmony is what you will find in this place, a perfect time to enjoy nature.

Trekking: Approx. 3-6hrs | Distance 4-9 km (weather and route dependent) | Hight gain/loss between +200 and +600m

Day 5 | Aletsch Glacier - Lac Louvie hut

Lac Louvie, or lake Louvie, is our final location and perhaps Jonas' favourite mountain hut in the whole alps. After breakfast, we will make our way out of the mountains and then drive across to the start of a very steep but beautiful hike up to Lac Louvie where Cabane de Louvie is located, probably one of the most beautifully situated mountain huts in the Alps. We will reach the hut in the afternoon and have the entire evening to explore the pristine lake, which often has calm waters that allows for mirror lake conditions - great for reflections of the Grand Combin, which stands at 4,314m (14,153ft) one of the Alps’ 82 4,000 meter peaks. The highlight will be sunset view from the lake.

Photography highlights: Gletscherstube Mountain Hut, Lac Louvie and surrounding areas

Trekking: Approx. 5hrs | Distance 2km + 3.5 km | Hight gain/loss +800m

Day 6 | Lac Louvie hut

We will set off before sunrise to hike an undulated narrow trail in the direction of Verbier, the famous ski resort. The trail starts with a steep hike up to Col Termin at 2,648 meters (8,687ft), where we have spotted eagles on several occasions (but we have never managed to photograph one - tele lenses at the ready!) and then take another route back down to the lake again allowing us to explore many photography locations on the way. In the evening we are back at the lake exploring different compositions and making sure we have the best opportunity for epic results.

Photography highlights: Col Termin, Lac Louvie and surrounding areas

Trekking: Approx. 3-6hrs | Distance 4-9 km (weather and route dependent) | Hight gain/loss between +200 and +600m

Day 7 | Lac Louvie hut - Geneva Airport

This is our last sunrise, final pictures in the making. After breakfast we have to say bye to Lac Louvie and start a 3 hours hike downhill to leave this breathtaking place. Once at the car, we will have just a short drive to a place for our final lunch together (great burgers) then the remaining 2 hours drive to the airport - finishing at around 3 PM.

Trekking: Approx. 5hrs | Distance 3.5 km | Hight gain/loss -800m

The entire expedition is delivered with a strong ethos for the protection of the environment where we will endeavour to leave as small a footprint as possible. We only use local suppliers for the expedition in an effort to contribute to local communities and economy.

The Agenda, Weather and Daylight Hours

The weather in the alps can either be stable for weeks or can change rapidly one hour to the next, so even though we have a planned agenda, this will be open to revision on the day. Each night we will study the weather forecast and the local maps to plan our next day.
